Suicide Prevention in Autism report and policy brief

The recent Australasian Society for Autism Research Health, Wellbeing, and Suicide Prevention in Autism conference highlighted the pressing need for a comprehensive, inclusive approach to autism research and mental health care. By integrating the voices of those with lived experience, the conference emphasised the importance of recognising Autistic culture as distinct and valuable. This perspective challenges traditional views of autism as merely a disorder, advocating instead for a holistic understanding that embraces the diverse experiences of Autistic individuals. Such an approach not only fosters better mental health outcomes but also strengthens the foundation for more effective suicide prevention strategies.

Moreover, the conference underscored the critical role of co-design in research and policy development. Involving Autistic individuals at every stage ensures that their unique needs and perspectives are accurately represented and addressed. This collaborative model promotes transparency, builds public confidence in research, and facilitates the translation of scientific findings into practical solutions. As we continue to push the boundaries of autism research, our commitment to inclusivity, empathy, and innovation remains steadfast, driving us towards a future where Autistic people and their communities can thrive.

    Hi,
I am part of a self-advocacy non-profit in Autism in Portugal, and we would love to know if it would be possible to translate into Portuguese the policy recommendations you developed (with all the credits).
We thinks it’s incredibly important and we hope we can share it. Thank you
