We are conducting this study to learn about:
- If eating a newly created nugget can improve gut and oral microbiome for Autistic people who experience feeding challenges.
- Feeding challenges can include things like picky eating, food selectivity, sensory aversions to foods, or receiving feeding therapy as a child.
You qualify to participate if:
- You are an Autistic adult (18+ years)
- You have current or past lived experience of feeding challenges.
- Can read and understand English.
You do not qualify to participate if:
- You have a history of allergic reactions to any ingredients in the nugget
- You have a co-occurring diagnosis that may affect feeding challenges (e.g., swallowing disorder, exclusive use of a g-tube to eat).
- You have a disrupted sensation of taste or smell
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
Participation involves:
You will be provided with frozen nuggets to prepare and eat in your home once daily for two weeks. You will also be asked to:
- Complete a short survey each day about what you ate and if you are having any gastrointestinal side effects like gas or bloating.
- Take a swab from your mouth (oral) and from your poop (faecal) at the beginning of the study and at end of each week (three times total)
- Complete a questionnaire about your diet, your gastrointestinal symptoms, and any medications or vitamins you’ve taken recently.
Participation will take between 30 and 60 minutes of your time each day for 2 weeks (approximately 14 hours total).
Reimbursement for participation
Participants will receive a $250 for their time in two payments:
- Participants will receive half of the payment amount ($125) after the first microbiome sample is collected at the beginning of the study.
- Participants will receive the second payment ($125) after the study is completed.

Interesting. How this food affects mood and wellness. Curious to what results are in store!
Such a shame we can’t do this in the ACT! My support group has 4000 members, mostly local to the ACT area so we’d have a big base to advertise to!
I’ll still post about it as some members have moved to Victoria (the group has been running since 2009). I’d be fascinated to hear the results, too.
Hi Fiona,
Thanks for your support! That’s great that you can share it with your members.
The results will appear here once they’re out.
Best, OTARC
